Prospective Graduate Students

How to apply
Applying takes two steps, and both are required.
- Submit your application through , the application system for all 23 CSU campuses. The include guides and instructions for each section of the application.
- Contact the department about additional application materials. Most programs ask for items Cal State Apply doesn’t collect, and some set their own deadline. Coordinator contacts are on the graduate program directory.
University deadlines are on the Admissions website for domestic applicants and the International Admissions website for international applicants. The Graduate Admissions site has instructions for transcripts and supporting documents.
Degree and certificate programs offered through self-support or run through and have separate registration, enrollment, and fees. Contact Continuing Education about admissions, costs, deadlines, and requirements for those programs.
Admission requirements
Admission to graduate and post-baccalaureate study follows university regulations and Title 5, Chapter 1, Subchapter 3 of the . You qualify for consideration if you:
- have completed a four-year college course of study and hold an acceptable baccalaureate;
- are in good academic standing at the last college or university you attended;
- have a grade point average of at least 2.5 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree;
- have a grade point average of at least 2.5 (A = 4.0) in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units attempted;
- meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations and course or grade prerequisites, that campus authorities prescribe.
Programs set their own admission requirements above these minimums.
Admission categories
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are considered for admission in one of four categories. The department you apply to decides which category you’re admitted under.
- Graduate classified applicants pursue a graduate degree and meet all standards the campus prescribes.
- Graduate conditionally classified applicants enter a degree program with deficiencies that additional preparation can remedy.
- Post-baccalaureate classified applicants enroll in a credential or certificate program and satisfy the additional standards that program requires.
- Post-baccalaureate unclassified applicants take undergraduate courses as preparation for advanced study, or graduate courses for professional or personal growth; this status carries no admission to a degree or credential program and no assurance of consideration for one.
International applicants
The International Admissions Office handles student visas, employment eligibility, academic requirements, and policies for international applicants, and sets separate requirements and filing dates. For admission purposes, international applicants include holders of U.S. temporary visas as students or exchange visitors and other non-immigrant classifications. California residents and U.S. citizens with international transcripts are evaluated as international applicants.
Applicants whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English must demonstrate English competence, whatever their citizenship. Applicants without a bachelor’s degree from an institution where English is the principal language of instruction submit test scores; current minimums are on the International Admissions site, and some programs require a higher score.
