CalTPA Policies, Scoring, and Remediation

Senate Bill 1209 (effective January 1, 2007), requires all teaching candidates to pass a Teacher Performance Assessment prior to being recommended for a California Teaching Credential. 麻豆传媒社区入口, East Bay administers the CalTPA for PK-3 to meet this mandate.

All CSUEB teacher candidates in the PK-3 ECE Specialist Credential Program (student teachers and interns) submit the CalTPAs (Cycles 1 and 2) during their final semester in the credential program. This performance assessment requires candidates to understand and demonstrate aspects of all the adopted PK-3 California Teacher Performance Expectations (TPE’s), a set of standards that clearly outline what beginning teachers should know and be able to do before receiving a Preliminary credential.

The CSUEB Teacher Education Department provides a great deal of support to prepare candidates for success on CalTPA. During the Student Teaching Seminar, candidates are given explicit guidance for completing the CalTPA. The CalTPA is administered by Evaluation Systems Group of Pearson. The program uses centralized scoring through the Pearson Assessment System using qualified CalTPA assessors. Registration for the CalTPA Cycles and submission of the CalTPA cycles is done through the . Candidates can find the submission and reporting dates and further information on the CalTPA at this website.

CalTPA Policies

  1. The recommended submission for CalTPA is in March or April depending upon the academic year. If a candidate submits the CalTPA at a later date, the candidate takes all responsibility for any delay in the issuance of their credential.

  2. Candidates must obtain video consent from guardians prior to recording anyone in the classroom under age 18. Students and other adults age 18 and older must also give consent to be recorded. Candidates use the provided by CSUEB, and they submit the Principal Authorization Form to verify having met this consent requirement in TED 578.

  3. All CalTPA submissions are governed by the CSUEB academic honesty policies and policies outlined in the CalTPA Candidate Handbooks. All CalTPA work must be original independent work (other than discussion led by your course instructors).

  4. A candidate cannot be recommended for the PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Preliminary Credential without passing the both cycles of the CalTPA.

Appeals, Remediation, and Resubmission

Candidates who do not earn a passing score have the opportunity to appeal or resubmit one or both CalTPA cycles. The cost payable to Pearson is $150 per cycle to be resubmitted.

Candidates who do not pass the CalTPA must resubmit. A 45-minute advising session is available in order to support candidate success in the resubmission. Candidates must contact the PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential Program Coordinator to schedule an advising session.

CalTPA Secondary Passing Standard

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved the use of a secondary passing standard for candidates whose CalTPA score was within a few points of the adopted CalTPA passing standard. Any candidate who believes their CalTPA falls within the secondary passing standard should contact the PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential Program Coordinator.
